Project Objectives
Overall objective: Effective joint management of natural and anthropogenic risks in the Danube border area
Specific objectives:
• Reducing the harmful impacts for the population and environment through joint prevention, monitoring and risks control
• mprovement the emergency preparedness and intervention to combat environment pollution
Project Activities
Module 0: PROJECT MANAGEMENT – working meetings of the team, project management and sub-contracting procedures; information and publicity; support activities.
Module 1: PREVENTION – developing and printing of joint manual “Good practices for risk prevention in the Danube border area”; creation of joint working systems for risk reduction; joint training seminar and information campaign.
Module 2: INTERVENTION – provision of new machinery and equipment to improve the activities related to the risk management.
Module 3: CONTROL – implementing a common system for rapid communication when the accidents occur; organization and holding of joint procedures and inspections for control of pollution after accidents
Module 5: RISK ASSESSMENT – assessment the water state in the Bulgarian-Romanian part of the Danube river and development measures for reduction the risks of it contamination.
Project Results
• Enhanced cooperation for effective management of natural and anthropogenic risks in the Danube border area;
• Reduced risks for population and environment;
• Increased capacity of the institutions and the communities for joint risk management in the Danube border area
Target Groups
The staff of the partners engaged with risk management, NGOs, citizens in the cross-border area
Duration of implementation – 36 months – 22.06.2011 – 21.06.2014

A team of experts from RIEW – Veliko Turnovo took part in a work session dedicated to the analysis of the institutional framework and the correspondency between national laws. The work session was held in the period from 9th to 13th January 2012 in the city of Bucharest. The experts delivered a presentation on the aspects of the institutional and legislative framework in the field of environmental protection, the transpose into national law of European directives regarding the cleanliness of the air, water management, waste management, chemical substances, complex permits, protected areas.
During a work meeting of the Monitoring committee under the project that was held in December in Giurgiu, Romania was reported the progress achieved in the implementation of the activities by the team of the Bulgarian partner – Regional inspectorate for Environment and Waters in Veliko Turnovo. The public report encompasses all interim outcomes from the project distributed into modules as follows:
Today, 21 September 2011 experts from RIEW Veliko Turnovo and Romanian National Environmental Guard will discuss the implementation of planned joint activities under strategic project “Joint risk monitoring during emergencies in the Danube area border”, MIS-ETC Code: 166, funded by the Romania – Bulgaria Cross-Border Cooperation Programme 2007-2013.
Both institutions are partners in the activities for environmental protection and control on pollution during emergencies in Bulgarian-Romania cross border region of Danube river.
The project started on 22 June this year and will continue 36 months. It’s main purpose is effective management of natural and anthropogenic risks in the cross border zone of Danube river.
